Botanical watercolor course – Calla lilies

Nine Lessons of two and a half hours each held weekly

Tuesday course: March 7 to May 9, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Thursday course: March 9 to May 4, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

One of the most elegant flowers: calla lily, its name comes from the Greek word Kalòs meaning beautiful. According to legend about the Greek gods, the first calla was born from the drops of mother’s milk that fell to Earth from the breast of the goddess Hera.

Hera, Juno to the Romans, was one of the most important god in Greek religion: protector of marriage, goddess of marital fidelity and childbirth, considered the ruler of Olympus. Drops of mother’s milk, in contact with the earth, gave birth to the first Calla lily, while the same mother’s milk, sprayed into the sky, gave birth to the famous Milky Way.

It symbolizes pure and delicate beauty but also sensuality and eroticism, and depending on the color it acquires additional meanings ranging from loyalty and maternal love to devotion, from friendship to sadness and sorrow.

Painting calla lilies, of which Zantedeschia are also a part, will allow us to deal with various types of topics: for those who will try their hand at the white variety will be an in-depth study of the use of white, a subject that is not easy because in reality what appears white is actually a complex set of more or less muted colors. Those who will choose the colored varieties, on the other hand, will learn how to shade the colors and make that shiny surface but also somewhat waxy surface, typical of Zantedeschia.

Courses are held at the headquarters of the Cultural Association “Firenze Alchemica” at 3/red Metastasio Street (Porta Romana area).
